Panda unexpressed is a senior capstone project designed by Zhuotong "Scarlett" Han, an art history major at Skidmore College.
Through decoding several visual representations of Chinese food and foodways in the US and China, Han traces a series of visible and hidden cultural transactions—the missing histories, the malleable narratives, and the perpetuated stereotypes. The website also includes Chinese food-related projects Han works on that encourage a more complex understanding of Chinese cuisine and culture.
This virtual space aims to promote visual literacy and stimulate dialogues that foster cultural collaboration, reconciliation, and reflexivity.
I am grateful to the Department of Art History and the Murray-Aikin's Dining Hall at Skidmore College for making my visions come alive, and to Saleema Waraich, Mimi Hellman, and Julia Walsh for their continuous support. I also thank those who have generously contributed to the project by sharing videos, audios, images, and personal stories.
